Engine-oil classifications without guesswork
An SAE multigrade such as 5W-30 combines a winter rating with a high-temperature viscosity grade. It does not state the oil's complete performance package. Treat each as a prompt to inspect the technical data, because emissions equipment, fuel type, oil-drain regime and engine design can make one same-viscosity oil appropriate and another unsuitable.

Oil quantity, filter work and post-fill checks
Prepare the correct filter, drain-plug seal and tools before releasing oil. Warm oil only as far as the service method requires, protect against burns and ensure the vehicle cannot move. Clean around fillers and filter housings so loose dirt does not enter. With cartridge filters, place each replacement O-ring in the designated groove; with spin-on filters, make certain the old gasket has left the engine.
A stated capacity is a planning figure. Actual service quantity may differ because of cooler volume, draining time, vehicle angle and retained oil. Refit and tighten components to specified values, add a conservative initial amount, circulate only when the procedure permits and finish at the correct mark after the required waiting period. Check beneath the engine while it runs and again after shutdown.

Coolant: chemistry matters more than appearance

Automatic transmissions, manual gearboxes and axles
Transmission oil is part of a calibrated system. In a conventional automatic it may operate hydraulic valves and torque-converter circuits while controlling clutch friction. Dual-clutch and continuously variable units impose their own requirements. Manual synchronisers and limited-slip differentials also depend on suitable friction and material compatibility. Product category names are therefore too broad for selection.
Use transmission or axle identification, not the dashboard selector pattern. Verify whether the intended operation is a drain-and-fill, filter and pan service, or another manufacturer procedure. A machine exchange is not automatically authorised. Check whether fasteners, pans, filters and seals are single-use, and use the exact fluid-level routine.
If the old fluid contains heavy metallic debris, coolant, burnt material or clutch fragments, pause for diagnosis. New fluid cannot rebuild worn bearings or friction packs. Conversely, darkened fluid alone does not provide a complete diagnosis; compare condition with service information and operating symptoms.
Hydraulic fluids, steering liquids and grease
Hydraulic-oil titles may carry an ISO viscosity grade, which describes a viscosity band at a reference temperature rather than universal machinery suitability. Pumps, seals, anti-wear requirements and fire or environmental constraints still matter. Automotive power-steering systems may specify a dedicated steering fluid, an automatic-transmission type or another hydraulic liquid. Consult the vehicle requirement rather than using whatever hydraulic product is nearby.
For grease, consider thickener compatibility, NLGI consistency, base oil, load, speed, water exposure and service temperature. "High temperature" is not a complete wheel-bearing specification. Clean old grease from a component when the service method requires it, avoid introducing grit and use the instructed quantity; overpacking a high-speed bearing can cause heat.

Use stands or an appropriate lift on firm, level ground for any under-vehicle filling operation.
