Read the soil before choosing chemistry
Oil, protein, dye and mineral residues behave differently
Body oil and sunscreen need controlled degreasing; mud contains mineral particles that should be vacuumed dry first; sugary spills require water-based removal; transferred clothing dye may have entered the coating. Randomly increasing solvent strength can remove the seat finish before the stain.
Blot fresh liquid without spreading it, identify the source and work from the edge towards the centre. Old stains may be chemically altered and need specialist assessment.

Dry removal comes first
Vacuum grit from seams, piping and perforations before adding liquid. Particles trapped under a brush act as abrasive. Use a nozzle without sharp edges and avoid pulling delicate stitching.
Compressed air can drive debris into electrical components and aerosolise contamination. A controlled vacuum and soft detailing brush are more predictable.
Colourfastness and hidden-area testing
Test the complete process—cleaner, brush, towel and drying—on a concealed area. Look for colour on the towel, altered sheen, swelling, hardening or a ring after it dries. A wet test that looks normal can change later.
A hidden test is not permission to scrub harder elsewhere. High-wear bolsters may already have weakened coatings.
Cleaning coated leather
Apply a small amount to a damp cloth or soft brush, work one panel at a time and prevent foam drying in perforations. Use light multidirectional agitation, then remove dissolved soil with a clean slightly damp towel and dry towel.

Absorbent and specialist leather
Aniline leather lacks a robust surface film and can absorb cleaner instantly. Water spots, darkening and dye migration are significant risks. Use only its prescribed system and refer valuable or damaged trim to a leather specialist.
Conditioner is not cleaner. Apply any conditioning or protective product only after cleaning, drying and confirming compatibility; excess oil can attract soil and transfer to clothing.

Why overwetting causes repeat problems
Liquid travels through fabric into foam, sensor mats and metal frames. Slow drying encourages odour and microbes; dissolved backing dyes can wick to the surface as brown rings. Adhesives may release.
More suction passes are useful, but pressing extractor heads too hard can damage foam or draw contamination from deep layers. If a cushion is saturated, remove and dry it by an appropriate professional method.
Perforated heated and ventilated seats
Perforations lead toward foam, fan channels and heating elements. Apply cleaner to the tool rather than spraying the seat and keep liquid out of holes. Do not use steam or concentrated heat unless the trim procedure explicitly permits it.
Test heating and ventilation after the seat is completely dry. A new warning or local hot spot requires immediate electrical diagnosis.
Side airbags and occupancy sensors
Seat airbags deploy through engineered seams. Do not saturate, glue, restitch or aggressively brush those seams. Occupancy-classification mats can be pressure and moisture sensitive.
If connectors were disturbed or an airbag warning appears, stop and follow the vehicle diagnostic procedure. Never test restraint wiring with an ordinary powered probe.
Seat belts require special restraint

Odour is often below the visible surface
Fragrance masks rather than removes contamination. Food, smoke and spills can enter foam, carpet underlay, headlining and ventilation. Clean the source and restore dry conditions before using an odour treatment.
Ozone and strong oxidisers can harm materials and lungs and require specialist controls. They are not routine substitutes for physical cleaning.
Drying and cabin ventilation
Increase air exchange and use moving, dehumidified air where safe. Keep doors secured and battery condition managed if open for long periods. Do not aim a heat gun at leather or foam.

Post-cleaning inspection
