Start by defining the application
Starter duty
A starter battery supplies a large current for a short period and is then replenished by the vehicle. CCA is therefore important alongside capacity. Capacity figures depend on test rate. A cyclic battery can yield fewer ampere-hours at a high discharge current than at its published long-hour rate. Temperature also affects available energy. For mobility range or caravan runtime, use equipment consumption and the battery's stated discharge data, not a simple Ah divided by amps calculation presented as a guarantee.
Physical data deserves the same attention. Check dimensions with terminals and covers included, verify polarity while viewing the case in the stated orientation, and match the connector thread or post. A battery that is not clamped can shift and short; one squeezed into an undersized enclosure can lose cooling space or suffer case damage.
Start-stop battery replacement
Start-stop and smart-charging systems cycle the battery more often than conventional starting. Determine the original battery technology from reliable vehicle data and the existing label. AGM and EFB are not generic marketing tiers: their construction and charge acceptance differ. Replace like with the technology authorised by the vehicle maker.
Many energy-managed vehicles use a battery-monitoring sensor and store information about battery age or state. The replacement may need registration through diagnostic equipment. Skipping that process can leave the charging strategy based on the old battery. Connect chargers and support units at the designated points so measured current passes through the sensor as intended.

Charging and storage
Select a charger whose programme explicitly suits flooded, AGM, gel or other stated construction. Voltage, current and termination behaviour matter. A high-current starter charger is not automatically suitable for a small motorcycle or VRLA battery, and an unregulated trickle supply can overcharge during long storage.
Charge in a ventilated, dry area away from flames and sparks. Inspect the case first; do not charge a frozen, swollen, leaking or physically damaged battery.
