Understanding engine-oil viscosity
An SAE multigrade such as 5W-30 describes viscosity performance at low temperature and at the standardised high-temperature test point. The number before W relates to cold-temperature behaviour; the second number identifies the high-temperature grade. It does not describe additive chemistry, emissions-system compatibility or manufacturer approval. Two products carrying the same SAE grade can be intended for different engines.
Lower is not automatically better and thicker is not automatically safer. Oil must circulate rapidly at start-up while maintaining the film behaviour designed for bearings, turbochargers, variable valve timing, piston cooling and other systems at operating temperature. The engine's clearances, pump and control strategy were validated around a defined requirement. Climate can influence recommendations, but only within options permitted by the vehicle manufacturer.

ACEA, API and manufacturer specifications
ACEA and API categories describe test performance across areas such as wear, deposits, oxidation and emissions-system compatibility. Vehicle manufacturers can add their own specifications for engine design, service interval and after-treatment needs. The complete code matters. Do not shorten a requirement to “ACEA C” or “manufacturer long-life oil”, because the number and revision separate products.
Low-SAPS oils limit sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur to suit certain particulate filters and catalysts. That does not mean every low-SAPS oil is interchangeable. Different ACEA C categories have distinct viscosity and high-temperature high-shear requirements. Conversely, using an oil with an unsuitable additive profile can affect after-treatment durability or engine protection even if the bottle shows the familiar SAE grade.

MaxLife is Valvoline's high-mileage family, but vehicle mileage does not override the required viscosity and specification. Electronic level systems can require a warm engine, closed bonnet, running or stopped state and a waiting period. A low reading should prompt inspection for leaks and consumption, not merely repeated top-ups.
Add only the correctly matched oil in small quantities. Overfilling can cause aeration, crankcase pressure, catalyst or particulate-filter problems and, on some diesels, serious running issues. If the existing oil cannot be identified, do not assume that any emergency top-up is harmless. The safest response depends on level, journey and manufacturer guidance.
During a change, protect the vehicle, use a suitable drain container and avoid hot oil. Replace the filter and drain-plug washer where specified, inspect the old filter or drained oil for coolant, fuel dilution or metallic debris, and tighten the plug and filter by the stated method. Start the engine only after confirming fill, then check the pressure warning goes out normally and inspect for leaks. Recheck the level after the prescribed settling period.

Manual gearbox, axle and transfer-case oils
Gear oils protect teeth and bearings, but transmissions can also depend on carefully controlled synchroniser friction. A product intended for a hypoid final drive may not suit a manual gearbox even when its viscosity appears similar. API GL-4 and GL-5 are service categories with different intended load and additive characteristics; GL-5 is not simply a better GL-4 for every application.
Check whether the vehicle uses a combined transaxle, separate differential, limited-slip unit or transfer case. Each can specify a distinct fluid. Some manual gearboxes require an ATF-like fluid rather than a conventional gear oil. Limited-slip differentials may require a particular frictional formulation or additive treatment. Use the exact specification and avoid adding a separate friction modifier unless instructed for the chosen product and axle.
Fill-level procedures vary. Some units are checked at a side plug with the vehicle level; others use a measured quantity or temperature-dependent process. Ensure the fill plug can be removed before draining. Clean around plugs, identify metallic paste versus abnormal fragments, replace sealing washers where specified and use the correct tightening torque.
ATF, CVT and dual-clutch fluid
Automatic transmission fluid is both a lubricant and a hydraulic and friction-control medium.
