Abracs: understand the range before choosing
Abracs supplies coated, bonded and surface-finishing abrasives. The AutoMotoPart range contains four materially different products: 150mm P180 pressure-sensitive sanding discs, 230mm depressed-centre cutting discs, fine wire wool and 100mm depressed-centre grinding discs. The live descriptions include unrelated catalogue fragments, so only verified abrasive details and markings on the delivered product should guide use.
AutoMotoPart currently lists 4 Abracs items. The largest Abracs groups are 3 maintenance entries, 1 230mmx3.2mm dpc cutting discs 25pk entry. Abracs totals can change, so a category count is orientation rather than proof that a particular reference suits a vehicle, workplace or job. The exact Abracs listing, its current technical information and the item in front of you must agree.
What the Abracs page actually covers
| Product group in this range | Current entries | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | 3 | Use 150mm P180 PSA discs only with a compatible full-face pressure-sensitive backing pad and supported sander speed. |
| 230MMX3.2MM DPC CUTTING DISCS 25PK | 1 | Select P180 for a documented sanding stage, recognising that it can cut through coatings and leave visible scratches. |
The page contains one coated sanding-disc pack, two bonded rotating-disc packs and one hand-finishing roll. Quantities are 100 PSA discs, 25 large cutting discs, one 450g wire-wool roll and 25 small grinding discs. The products do not share mounting, maximum speed or safe contact surface, despite all being described as abrasives.
Build a reliable shortlist
Read the machine plate and the marking on the current or delivered abrasive. Record tool type, no-load RPM, spindle and flange, guard size, work material and operation. For sanding, identify backing-pad attachment and hole pattern. For wire wool, test material response and plan fibre collection.
| Check | Why it matters | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | Cutting edges, grinding faces, PSA sanding and wire wool work differently | Task method and full product description |
| Dimensions | Diameter, thickness, bore and disc profile determine mounting | Wheel marking, spindle, flange and guard |
| Speed | An overspeed wheel can burst catastrophically | Tool no-load RPM no higher than abrasive maximum |
| Material | Metal, stone, paint, plastic and stainless need appropriate abrasive grades | Disc pictograms, grade and manufacturer guidance |
| Condition | Impact, damp, age or damaged backing weakens an abrasive | Visual inspection, storage history and expiry marking |
| Exposure | Dust, sparks, noise and fragments create separate hazards | Extraction, fire control, PPE and exclusion zone |
Do not select by diameter alone. Two 230mm discs may differ in bore, thickness, grade, material restrictions and maximum speed. The complete marking must remain legible until the disc is discarded.
150mm P180 PSA sanding discs
Abracs officially describes its standard PSA discs as aluminium oxide on 160gsm paper, with an easy-peel tab and use on supported wood, metal, plastic and fibreglass. The live product is a 150mm, no-hole P180 pack of 100. It needs a clean, flat PSA backing pad rather than a hook-and-loop pad, and the whole disc should be supported without lifting edges.
P180 is a relatively defined sanding step, not a universal finishing grade. On paint repair it may level primer or an earlier stage but can expose substrate or leave scratches visible through topcoat. Follow the coating system's grit sequence, use dust extraction and avoid sanding lead, chromate, asbestos-containing or unknown old coatings until hazards are assessed.
230mm depressed-centre cutting discs
The title gives 230 x 3.2mm, depressed-centre construction and a 25-pack, with code shown as 32066A. Trade listings identify the historic product as 32066 and describe a general-purpose metal cutting grade, but the delivered box and disc marking are final. Do not rely on either catalogue code if the label is missing or inconsistent.
Fit only to a guarded 230mm grinder whose spindle, flange and speed match the wheel. Cutting discs work on the edge with a straight, controlled cut. Avoid lateral pressure, curved cutting and levering the disc within the kerf. Support both sides of the work so the cut does not close and pinch the wheel, and let it stop naturally before setting the tool down.
100mm depressed-centre grinding discs
The live grinding product is titled 100 x 6.4mm and pack quantity 25. Current Abracs Proflex data lists closely related 100mm depressed-centre metal and stone grinding discs with distinct grades, a 16mm bore and marked maximum speed. Because the evidence title does not identify metal or stone grade or bore, verify all of those on the supplied wheel rather than adopting one current catalogue row.
Grinding wheels are used on their reinforced face at the angle stated by the manufacturer. Maintain two-handed control and an intact side handle. Excessively flat contact, edge use or deep cutting can side-load the wheel. Dress only if the exact bonded product and procedure permit it; otherwise discard glazing, cracks, chips or an out-of-round disc.
Fine wire wool for hand preparation
The fine 450g roll is listed for surface preparation and finishing. A matching Tool Connection sheet describes fine-grade wire wool for light rust, marks, cleaning and buffing on compatible metal, wood and glass. Always test first because wire fibres can scratch polished glass, chrome-look plastic, paint, soft aluminium and clear coatings.
Wear gloves appropriate to sharp fibres and tear off material without leaving long strands. Do not use near live electrics, magnets, rotating machinery or an engine intake. Collect loose steel fragments with a suitable vacuum or controlled method; they can short circuits, contaminate stainless work and later form rust spots beneath paint or varnish.
Mounting, operation and storage
Disconnect mains or battery power and verify the tool cannot start. Check guard, side handle, spindle, flanges and threads, then mount without over-tightening. The blotter or label must not be removed where it forms part of safe mounting. Run a newly fitted bonded disc at operating speed in a guarded safe direction before contacting work, standing outside its plane.
Store bonded wheels dry, flat or supported as instructed, away from impact and temperature extremes. Keep PSA discs clean and sealed so adhesive and paper do not absorb contamination. Separate wire wool from ignition sources and oxidisers. Record damaged batches and discard abrasives through the appropriate route; a cheap suspect wheel is never worth testing under load.
From identification to a checked result
| Stage | Good practice for this range | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Define | Choose cutting, face grinding, PSA sanding or hand finishing | Using whichever abrasive has the right diameter |
| Match | Check dimensions, bore, profile, grade, material and RPM | Fitting an unreadable or overspeed wheel |
| Inspect | Assess wheel, backing, guard, flange, handle and stored condition | Using a dropped, damp or cracked disc |
| Control | Secure work, extract dust, contain sparks and use PPE | Cutting near fuel, glass or unprotected people |
| Operate | Use correct surface, angle and pressure and stop on vibration | Twisting a cutting disc or edge-cutting with a grinding wheel |
Retain the Abracs box label until all discs are consumed, including batch, code, grade and speed. If loose discs become separated from readable identification, quarantine them rather than guessing their application.
Reading real Abracs references
The Abracs names below are examples from the current range and show why the complete description matters. They are not universal Abracs recommendations and should not be treated as a fitment list. Within Abracs, a shared family word can conceal a different dimension, connector, material, pack format, operating condition or installation side.
| Example listing | What to verify beyond the name |
|---|---|
| PSA Sanding Discs - P180 - 150mm - Pack Of 100 | 150mm P180 PSA disc, no-hole backing and compatible pressure-sensitive pad |
| Abracs 32066A 230MMX3.2MM DPC CUTTING DISCS 25PK | 230 x 3.2mm DPC cutting disc, 32066/32066A code, bore, grade and RPM |
| Wire Wool - Fine - 450g | 100 x 6.4mm grinding disc, material, bore, grade, maximum speed and face angle |
| Grinding Discs - Depressed Centre -100mm x 6.4mm - Box Qty 25 | Fine 450g wire wool, substrate test, fibre containment and electrical exclusion |
Unrelated cooling-hose and steering-component fragments in the source descriptions have no connection to Abracs and were excluded. Use the delivered abrasive marking and verified product pages only.
Common errors around Abracs products
- Trusting corrupted product-description fragments as abrasive or vehicle-fit information.
- Mounting a wheel whose maximum RPM is below the grinder's no-load speed.
- Grinding on the side of a cutting disc or cutting with a grinding wheel not designed for it.
- Using a 150mm PSA disc on hook-and-loop backing or with an unsupported lifted edge.
- Running without the correct guard and side handle or standing in the wheel plane at start-up.
- Cutting where the work can pinch the disc or sparks can reach fuel and glass.
- Using wire wool near live electrics or leaving steel fibres on stainless and painted work.
- Reusing a dropped, wet, cracked or unreadably marked bonded disc.
