FABSIL

Fabsil products on this page cover three stages of outdoor-equipment care. Universal Cleaner is the preparation product, supplied in a 500ml bottle. Seam Sealer is a 30g tube for supported seam and small tear repair. Waterproofing choices include 400ml and 600ml Universal Protector sprays, one-, 2.5- and five-litre Universal Protector UV, and Fabsil Gold in 200ml spray and one-litre paint-on formats. The Tent Care Kit combines cleaning and protection items, but its current contents still need checking before use.

Choose by fabric, existing coating, article size, desired UV protection and spray-on or paint-on application—not by container size alone. The current AutoMotoPart selection contains 10 Fabsil items, led by 10 caravan & camping entries. These Fabsil figures describe the range on this page rather than every product the brand may make elsewhere.

Inspect the tent, awning, soft top or cover when clean and fully opened. Identify nylon, polyester, canvas, polycotton, coated or laminated panels, windows, zips and seam tape, then read the article maker's care instructions. Test colour and finish in a hidden area. Remove loose dirt before using Universal Cleaner at its stated dilution; rinse thoroughly and let the fabric dry naturally. Repair tears or failing seams before proofing, because repellent will not restore torn cloth or rotten stitching.

Apply protector outdoors or with strong ventilation over a covered surface, away from ignition sources where the label warns of solvent vapour. Work evenly on clean compatible fabric, wipe runs and allow complete drying before folding, packing or exposure to rain. The standard spray suits smaller and hard-to-reach areas; larger UV and Gold formats are paint-on treatments with different features and coverage. Fabsil states that Gold is more durable while Universal Protector UV adds UV protection, so one is not simply a larger version of the other. Keep proofing products away from clear windows, groundsheets, vehicle paint, grass and tarmac unless specifically permitted. The products below provide a neutral process guide; the exact Fabsil label and fabric manufacturer's instructions determine final suitability.

Fabsil: understand the range before choosing

Fabsil is Grangers' outdoor-fabric protection range, introduced in the 1960s and now focused on cleaning, waterproofing and repairing tents, awnings and related equipment. The current ten-item collection includes spray-on Universal Protector, paint-on Universal Protector UV, concentrated Gold formats, Universal Cleaner, Seam Sealer and a Tent Care Kit. These jobs are sequential rather than interchangeable: clean first where needed, repair sound fabric and seams, then apply the correct protector to a compatible dry article.

AutoMotoPart currently lists 10 Fabsil items. The largest Fabsil groups are 10 caravan & camping entries. Fabsil totals can change, so a category count is orientation rather than proof that a particular reference suits a vehicle, workplace or job. The exact Fabsil listing, its current technical information and the item in front of you must agree.

What the Fabsil page actually covers

Product group in this rangeCurrent entriesSelection focus
Caravan & Camping10Confirm fabric, coating, colour test, article area, application format, ventilation, drying and current Fabsil directions.

All ten entries are grouped under caravan and camping. Five sizes carry the Universal Protector or Universal Protector UV name, two are Gold, and three cover cleaning, seam repair or a combined kit. The 400ml and 600ml standard protectors are spray-on; the one-, 2.5- and five-litre UV listings are intended for larger paint-on coverage. The 200ml Gold product is a spray, while the one-litre Gold product is painted or applied through a suitable spray bottle according to its current directions.

Build a reliable shortlist

Start with the article's condition. Dirty but intact fabric needs cleaning; local leakage at stitching may need seam repair; sound clean fabric that wets out may need reproofing. UV exposure, fabric weight and total area then guide the protector and quantity. A waterproofing treatment cannot correct damaged seam tape, delamination, brittle fabric or failed structural stitching.

CheckWhy it mattersUseful evidence
FabricNylon, polyester, canvas, polycotton and laminated cloth can need different careArticle label and Fabsil suitability list
ConditionMould, tears, failed tape and coating breakdown need diagnosis before proofingClean inspection inside and outside
Protection goalStandard repellency, UV protection and Gold durability are separate featuresExposure, article use and official product comparison
ApplicationAerosol, paint-on liquid and kit products use different methodsArea, ventilation, brush or spray control
CoverageFabric weight and absorbency change the amount requiredMeasured article area and official coverage guide
DryingFolding damp or solvent-wet fabric can cause sticking, odour or mouldWeather window, airflow and complete dry check

Do not calculate quantity from floor footprint alone; roofs, walls, vestibules and awning panels add substantial area. Porous canvas can use more product than lightweight nylon. Where the article manufacturer prohibits solvent-based proofers or requires a particular coating system, that instruction overrides a generic fabric match.

Cleaning before waterproofing

Fabsil Universal Cleaner is a water-based preparation product. The official method starts by brushing away loose dirt, then uses 100ml in five litres of water, applied with a clean cloth or soft brush before thorough rinsing. Work a manageable panel and avoid aggressive scrubbing that damages coating or drives dirt into the weave.

Allow the article to dry fully and inspect again. Do not machine-wash or tumble-dry a tent unless its maker explicitly permits it. Household detergent, bleach and fabric softener can leave residues or attack waterproof coatings. Treat mould and biological staining through material-specific guidance rather than trapping it beneath repellent.

Universal Protector spray and UV paint-on formats

The 400ml and 600ml Universal Protector products are spray-on formats. Fabsil directs application from roughly 10–15cm onto clean fabric, even coverage, removal of droplets and complete drying. They are useful for smaller articles, seams, zips and harder-to-reach areas, but overspray must be controlled and nearby windows or finishes protected.

Universal Protector UV in one-, 2.5- and five-litre formats combines durable repellency with stated UV protection. Use a clean brush or approved sprayer and maintain a wet edge across panels so the finish remains even. UV protection does not make degraded fabric permanent; inspect for fading, brittleness and reduced tear strength before treatment.

Fabsil Gold spray and paint-on protection

Fabsil Gold is the more concentrated protection family. The 200ml entry is a spray suited to limited areas, while the one-litre product is normally painted on or applied using a clean suitable spray bottle. Official guidance lists different coverage for lightweight nylon, lightweight canvas and medium-weight canvas, showing why a single litres-per-tent estimate is unreliable.

Gold does not include the UV feature attributed to Universal Protector UV. Select it when its higher durability and supported fabric list match the job, not merely because the article is old. Apply to clean fabric, wipe excess, give extra attention to seams where directed and leave completely dry for as long as possible before packing or weather exposure.

Seam Sealer and local repairs

Fabsil Seam Sealer is supplied in a 30g tube with an applicator brush. Lay the clean dry article flat and apply a thin even film over supported seams. For a small tear, Fabsil describes temporary backing tape, filling and extending the sealer about 0.5cm beyond the damage before removing tape after drying.

A sealer cannot replace torn structural webbing, failed zips, extensive seam-tape delamination or fabric with lost strength. Repair those through the article maker or a competent specialist. Keep wet sealer from windows and moving zip teeth, and confirm silicone-coated fabric compatibility through the exact directions before broader application.

Tent Care Kit, drying and storage

The Tent Care Kit is a convenient combined route, but check its current cleaner, protector, sponge and quantities rather than relying on an older photograph. Follow each component's separate label. A kit does not automatically cover the full area of a large family tent, awning or marquee, and the cleaning stage may require extra water, containers and drying time.

Pitch or hang the article until every layer, seam, pocket and ground-facing fold is dry. Ventilate away remaining odour, keep the fabric clear of flame and do not pack proofed material while tacky. Store loosely in a cool dry place where possible. After the first rain, inspect for missed areas or seam leakage and retreat only through the supported method.

From identification to a checked result

StageGood practice for this rangeMistake to avoid
InspectIdentify fabric, coating, damage, leakage and total treated areaProofing over tears, mould or delamination
CleanRemove loose dirt, use correct cleaner dilution, rinse and dryUsing household detergent or leaving residue
RepairSeal supported seams and small tears on clean dry fabricTreating sealer as structural stitching
ProtectApply the matched standard, UV or Gold product evenlyMixing products or ignoring overspray

Record the Fabsil product, batch, fabric, cleaned area, repair locations and application date. Keep a small map of roof and wall panels so later maintenance can distinguish a missed patch from general wear. Reassess after cleaning and weather exposure rather than applying extra coats on a timetable alone.

Reading real Fabsil references

The Fabsil names below are examples from the current range and show why the complete description matters. They are not universal Fabsil recommendations and should not be treated as a fitment list. Within Fabsil, a shared family word can conceal a different dimension, connector, material, pack format, operating condition or installation side.

Example listingWhat to verify beyond the name
Fabsil Universal Protector 400ml400ml standard spray, supported fabric, hidden test, 10–15cm distance and complete drying
Fabsil Universal Protector 600ml600ml standard spray, article area, overspray masking, even coverage and ventilation
Fabsil Universal Protector UV 1ltrOne-litre UV product, paint-on method, fabric area, UV requirement and brush control
Fabsil Universal Protector UV 2.5ltr2.5-litre UV product, same formula check, large-area coverage plan and storage
Fabsil Universal Protector UV 5ltrFive-litre UV product, decanting, compatible applicator, ventilation and spill containment
Fabsil Universal Protector Gold 200ml200ml Gold spray, concentrated family, small-area use, supported fabric and no inferred UV claim
Fabsil Gold Universal Protector 1ltrOne-litre Gold paint-on, fabric weight, official coverage, clean brush and excess removal
Fabsil Universal Cleaner 500Ml500ml Cleaner, 100ml-to-five-litre dilution, rinse and natural full drying

Container size does not define the chemistry. The standard 400ml and 600ml aerosols, UV paint-on liquids and Gold formats must retain their complete names. Universal Cleaner prepares fabric, while Seam Sealer repairs selected local faults; neither is a protector.

Common errors around Fabsil products

  • Applying Fabsil over dirt, detergent residue, mould or damp fabric.
  • Assuming Gold and Universal Protector UV have identical features.
  • Using a spray indoors without adequate ventilation and overspray control.
  • Coating clear windows, groundsheets, vehicle paint or an unsupported laminated fabric.
  • Underestimating area by measuring only the tent footprint.
  • Using Seam Sealer instead of repairing failed structural stitching or large tears.
  • Leaving runs or droplets to dry as visible patches.
  • Packing the article before protector, seams and hidden folds are completely dry.
