Avoid bonding unknown plastic until it is identified. Polyethylene, polypropylene, silicone and heavily plasticised materials can resist common adhesives or need special preparation. A hidden test can reveal surface damage but does not prove long-term structural performance.
Liquid, gel and bottle superglues
The three Bostik superglue products share cyanoacrylate chemistry but use different delivery formats. A liquid tube or easy-flow bottle can penetrate a fine, close-fitting horizontal fracture; the gel is thicker and less likely to run on vertical or porous work. None is a gap-filling structural resin. The smallest controlled amount generally cures more reliably than flooding the joint.
Dry-fit parts and arrange alignment before opening. Protect the bench and point the nozzle away from the face. Apply to one surface as directed, join immediately and hold for the specified set time without adjusting. Moisture triggers cyanoacrylate cure, including moisture on skin and eyes, so avoid contact. Prevent cotton or wool contacting spills because some cyanoacrylates can react strongly with cellulose material.
Hard and Soft Plastics Adhesives
Bostik Hard Plastics Adhesive is documented for identified rigid materials including PVC-U, ABS and high-impact polystyrene, with other listed substrates subject to its instructions. Soft Plastics Adhesive is a flexible-repair product for flexible PVC, polyurethane and specified rubbers and may be supplied with repair patch material. The words hard and soft describe application families, not a complete compatibility test.
Clean away grease and release agents and abrade only where the technical sheet instructs. Apply the defined film to one or both surfaces, respect the waiting period and press with accurate alignment. Soft-plastic repairs need the patch shape, corner radius, overlap and full-strength time specified. Do not use either adhesive on pressurised inflatables, safety equipment or a fluid system merely because the base polymer seems similar.
All Purpose and EVO-STIK Impact
Bostik All Purpose is a clear solvent-borne adhesive for a broad published material list. Its method changes between hard non-absorbent and absorbent surfaces: the former may require adhesive on both faces and a drying period, while the latter can use a different assembly sequence. Consult the current sheet instead of applying one generic method to every repair.
EVO-STIK Impact is a contact adhesive sold here in two tubes and a 500ml tin. Contact adhesive is normally spread as an even film on both prepared faces and allowed to reach its stated condition before joining. Once the coated surfaces touch, repositioning is limited or impossible, so use guides or spacers for large laminates. Ventilate solvent vapour and keep ignition sources away as required by the label and safety data.
Blu Tack temporary fixing
Blu Tack Handy is a reusable pressure-sensitive tack rather than a curing repair adhesive. Bostik recommends clean, dry, non-porous surfaces for typical light-duty use. Knead a suitable amount, press between the item and surface and distribute the load. It is not designed for heavy, valuable or safety-critical objects or for a location where falling could distract a driver.
The adhesive effect can increase over time and an oily mark can remain on some surfaces. Avoid absorbent, delicate, recently decorated or heat-sensitive finishes and conduct an inconspicuous test. Remove by rolling gently rather than pulling paint outward, then use a fresh piece to lift fragments. In a vehicle, keep it off airbags, pedals, displays, sensors, vents and controls.
Preparation, cure and safe removal
A bond is only as sound as its surfaces. Remove failed adhesive without gouging the substrate, degrease with a compatible product and allow full drying. Check joint fit before applying adhesive and provide clamping or pressure exactly as directed. Temperature and humidity alter open time and cure, so avoid improvising with heaters or excessive adhesive.
