Loctite: understand the range before choosing
Loctite is Henkel's engineering adhesive and sealant brand. The current selection crosses several distinct technologies: medium- and high-strength threadlockers, retaining compounds, moisture-curing silicone gaskets, instant adhesives, two-part epoxies, rust treatment, penetrating oil and Teroson repair products. These families cure differently and cannot be selected from the brand name or colour alone.
AutoMotoPart currently lists 23 Loctite items. The largest Loctite groups are 20 maintenance entries, 1 loctite ocean sgl precision 5g entry, 1 loctite s glue all plastics 2g 4ml entry, 1 teroson ep 1401 dual cartridge entry. Loctite totals can change, so a category count is orientation rather than proof that a particular reference suits a vehicle, workplace or job. The exact Loctite listing, its current technical information and the item in front of you must agree.
What the Loctite page actually covers
| Product group in this range | Current entries | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | 20 | Match metal thread size, medium strength, engagement, oil condition, service temperature and future hand-tool removal. |
| LOCTITE OCEAN SGL PRECISION 5G | 1 | For mirror bonder, confirm glass, mirror pad, activator, orientation, fixture time and vehicle-specific sensor or camera concerns. |
| LOCTITE S GLUE ALL PLASTICS 2G 4ML | 1 | Treat Teroson leak and chemical-metal products by exact substrate, damage, chemical exposure and structural limits. |
| TEROSON EP 1401 DUAL CARTRIDGE | 1 | For plastics, identify polymer and primer requirement; soft plastics and polypropylene may need exclusion or special treatment. |
Ten entries are grouped as repair kits, with threadlockers, flange sealant, all-purpose sealants, glues and maintenance sprays also represented. Silicone appears in four titles and Teroson in three. The page therefore spans household-sized instant adhesive and engine-facing sealing products; neither category should inherit the other's preparation or safety assumptions.
Build a reliable shortlist
Select by function first, then strength and chemistry. A threaded fastener needing routine service is not a bearing fit, and a rigid epoxy is not a flexible formed-in-place gasket. Confirm whether the original joint uses a dry gasket, liquid sealant, both or neither before adding chemistry.
| Check | Why it matters | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Joint type | Threads, cylindrical fits, flanges and surface bonds carry load differently | Repair drawing and the precise Loctite application category |
| Substrates | Active metals, passive metals, glass, ceramics and plastics cure or bond differently | Both material identities and product compatibility |
| Strength | Medium, high and retaining grades imply different service and removal methods | Required load, fastener size and future dismantling plan |
| Gap | Anaerobic, instant, silicone and epoxy products tolerate different bond lines | Measured joint clearance and technical-data limit |
| Environment | Oil, coolant, fuel, heat, vibration and weather can attack an unsuitable cure | Published resistance for the exact product after full cure |
| Process | Activator, mixing, fixture and full-cure times affect the result | Current data sheet, temperature and application equipment |
Do not identify a Loctite product by red, blue, black or grey colour alone. Colour can help within a known family, but the complete number is the engineering reference. If the bottle or cartridge is unlabelled, cured in the nozzle or beyond its stated condition, do not use it on a critical joint.
Threadlockers and retaining products
Loctite 243 is officially identified as a medium-strength anaerobic threadlocker for metal threaded assemblies and is intended to remain removable with ordinary tools. Loctite 270 is high strength and has different disassembly implications. Confirm fastener diameter, metal, engagement and specified product. Apply to the working thread zone; excess in a blind hole can generate hydraulic pressure or enter a passage.
A retaining compound secures cylindrical parts such as bearings, bushes or studs and is not simply stronger threadlocker. Check fit class, clearance, surface wear and alignment. Adhesive cannot correct an oval housing or damaged shaft outside its supported gap. Press or assemble without scraping all liquid away, hold position through fixture and wait for full cure before operational load.
Silicone gaskets and flange sealing
SI 5980, SI 5990, SI 5926, SI 5940 and SI 5660 are separate silicone formulations. Henkel describes SI 5980 for oil-resistant, high-movement gasketing and large gaps, while SI 5990 has its own heat and substrate profile. Confirm whether the flange is stamped, cast, rigid or flexible and whether the vehicle procedure permits formed-in-place silicone.
Remove old sealant without gouging faces, clean bolt holes and keep debris from the system. Apply the stated bead diameter and route, circling holes only where directed. Assemble within skin time and tighten in sequence to current torque. Too much material can squeeze into oil or coolant passages; too little or a broken bead can leak. Respect cure before filling or pressurising.
Instant, plastic and glass bonding
Instant adhesives need close contact and careful positioning. Fit components dry before dispensing, protect fingers and eyes, and use minimal controlled product. Porous surfaces, acidic contamination and low humidity can alter cure. Gel, precision and controlled-dispenser products differ in flow; do not use a thin liquid where capillary travel could reach switches, lenses or finished trim.
Plastic bonding begins with polymer identification. Polypropylene, polyethylene, flexible plastics and treated surfaces can exclude a general super glue or require a primer. Rear-view-mirror bonding also needs the correct glass, mounting pad and activator method. Modern mirror assemblies can carry cameras or sensors, so a detached bracket may require calibrated specialist repair rather than adhesive alone.
Epoxy, metal repair and structural limits
Two-part epoxy and chemical-metal products require the correct ratio and uniform mixing. Dual cartridges still need the specified nozzle and initial purge. Prepare sound substrate, remove corrosion and support parts against movement. Temperature controls working and cure time; do not add extra hardener or heat blindly to speed the process.
A product title mentioning tanks, radiators or metal does not authorise every fuel, pressure or safety-critical repair. Leaking fuel, brake components, structural suspension points and pressurised vessels require an approved repair assessment. Drilling, filing or painting after cure may be supported for one compound but does not prove the underlying component has recovered design strength.
Release spray, rust treatment and chemical safety
Freeze & Release penetrating oil and SF 7505 Rust Remedy occupy preparation or maintenance stages, not adhesive substitution. Protect nearby rubber, coatings and friction surfaces and control aerosol ignition and ventilation. A penetrant can help free corrosion but cannot repair stretched fasteners or damaged threads; rust treatment cannot restore section thickness lost from metal.
Use safety data for gloves, eye protection, ventilation, spills and disposal. Do not clean skin with solvent. Close bottles promptly and avoid cross-contaminating nozzles, primers and activators. Cured adhesive waste and uncured chemical waste may need different handling. Where dismantling later requires heat, assess adjacent fuel, wiring, seals and coatings before applying it.
From identification to a checked result
| Stage | Good practice for this range | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Define | Identify joint, materials, loads, fluids, gap and future removal | Choosing the strongest or fastest product by default |
| Select | Match complete Loctite number and current technical data | Relying on colour, pack size or family name |
| Prepare | Clean, abrade or activate exactly as directed and dry-fit parts | Applying over corrosion, oil or a distorted interface |
| Apply | Control bead, dose or mix and assemble within working time | Filling a blind hole or adding excess hardener |
| Cure | Hold, torque and wait for required fixture and full cure | Loading, filling or pressurising because the surface feels dry |
Record the full Loctite or Teroson code, batch, preparation, activator, mix and cure conditions with the repair. That traceability is essential if removal, fluid exposure or repeat leakage later needs investigation.
Reading real Loctite references
The Loctite names below are examples from the current range and show why the complete description matters. They are not universal Loctite recommendations and should not be treated as a fitment list. Within Loctite, a shared family word can conceal a different dimension, connector, material, pack format, operating condition or installation side.
| Example listing | What to verify beyond the name |
|---|---|
| Loctite 243 Lock N Seal 24ML Bottle | Product number, joint type, substrates, gap, strength and removal plan |
| Rear View Mirror Bonder - 0.5ml | Surface preparation, activator, mix ratio, bead or dose and working time |
| Teroson Up 120 - Leak Fix | Fluid, temperature, vibration, cure and structural repair limits |
| Teroson Up 130 - Chemical Metal | Safety data, ventilation, exposure controls and chemical waste route |
| Loctite 2947500 LOCTITE S GLUE ALL PLASTICS 2G 4ML | Product number, joint type, substrates, gap, strength and removal plan |
| Loctite 2989943 TEROSON EP 1401 DUAL CARTRIDGE | Surface preparation, activator, mix ratio, bead or dose and working time |
| Loctite 3033916 LOCTITE OCEAN SGL PRECISION 5G | Fluid, temperature, vibration, cure and structural repair limits |
| Plastic Padding Super Steel Epoxy Weld - 2 X 25g | Safety data, ventilation, exposure controls and chemical waste route |
The examples move from 243 and 270 threadlockers through silicone gaskets, super glues, epoxy, penetrating oil and rust treatment. Keep the complete Loctite number and technology; a nearby pack size or shared word such as sealant does not establish interchangeability.
Common errors around Loctite products
- Choosing Loctite adhesive by colour instead of the complete product number.
- Using high-strength threadlocker where future routine dismantling is required.
- Treating retaining compound as a universal substitute for threadlocker.
- Applying excess silicone where it can enter an oil or coolant passage.
- Bonding unidentified plastic without checking exclusions or primer.
- Adding extra hardener to accelerate an epoxy repair.
- Using chemical metal as an assumed structural, brake or fuel-system repair.
- Returning a joint to pressure or load before full cure.
Loctite questions and answers
Q: What Loctite products are represented here?
A: The range includes threadlockers, retaining and gasket products, instant and plastic adhesives, epoxies, repair compounds, penetrant and rust treatment.
Q: What is Loctite 243?
A: Henkel identifies it as a medium-strength metal threadlocker intended to resist loosening while remaining serviceable with ordinary tools.
Q: Is Loctite 270 the same strength as 243?
A: No. It is a high-strength product with different removal implications and must be selected deliberately.
Q: Can threadlocker replace correct bolt torque?
A: No. Assemble and tighten the fastener to the specified mechanical procedure.
Q: Can retaining compound be used on any worn bearing fit?
A: No. Measure the clearance and condition; damage outside the product's supported gap needs mechanical repair.
Q: Are all Loctite silicones interchangeable?
A: No. Flange type, gap, fluid, temperature, movement and cure profile differ by product number.
Q: How much silicone gasket should be used?
A: Apply the bead size and path stated for the exact joint; excess can squeeze into internal passages.
Q: Can super glue bond every plastic?
A: No. Identify the polymer and check whether primer or another adhesive system is required.
Q: Can mirror bonder be used around a camera unit?
A: Only where the exact vehicle and bonding procedure support it; sensor alignment may require specialist work.
Q: Does chemical metal restore structural strength?
A: Do not assume so. Safety-critical or pressurised parts need an approved structural repair assessment.
Q: Why is full cure different from fixture time?
A: Fixture means the joint can hold initial position; full chemical and load performance can take longer.
Q: What should be recorded?
A: Keep the product code, surface preparation, mix or activator, cure conditions and repair location.
