Rotary seal geometry and material
A shaft seal separates fluid from the surrounding environment while allowing a rotating member to pass through the housing. Its working edge, support, dust exclusion and pumping features are designed for a defined shaft direction, speed, pressure and lubricant. CORTECO sample specifications show meaningful variation: frontal and transmission-side crankshaft positions, right-hand twist details, dust lips, flanges and mounting sleeves.
Dimensions must all correspond. Inner diameter relates to the shaft running surface, outer diameter to the housing and height to the axial space and installation depth. Measuring a distorted removed seal can help expose a mismatch, but current application data and the new part specification are stronger evidence than a worn component alone.

Diagnose the reason for leakage first
A wet seal area identifies a symptom, not necessarily the failed source. Clean the assembly and trace fluid from its highest point. Engine oil may travel from a cover, breather or pressurised gallery; gearbox oil can spread along a casing seam; grease from a damaged boot can imitate a hub-seal leak. Confirm the fluid and origin before dismantling.
Inspect the shaft for a polished groove, pitting, burrs and excessive radial or axial movement. Check housing damage and breather function. A blocked crankcase or transmission vent can raise pressure. Bearing wear may allow a shaft to move beyond the seal's working capacity. Replacing the seal alone in those conditions is unlikely to provide a durable repair.
Also establish whether the old seal was installed squarely and at the intended depth. Evidence of a rolled lip, spring displacement, tool marks or sealant contamination helps explain early failure. Photograph the original arrangement before removal when access will later obscure orientation.
Installation practice for CORTECO seals
Cleanliness and controlled force are central. Drain the system as required and prevent workshop grit entering the open housing. Remove the old seal without scoring the bore or shaft. Dress only damage that service information allows; do not polish away a critical dimension. Clean the seating face and check that no fragment of metal case or gasket remains.
Protect the new lip from threads, splines and keyways with the specified sleeve or suitable smooth protection. Apply lubricant only where the exact instructions call for it. Certain PTFE sealing lips require dry assembly onto a dry shaft and a defined waiting period before operation. A generic "oil every seal" habit can defeat that design.
Press on the correct face with a tool that supports the seal evenly. Keep it square and stop at the specified depth. Hammering one edge can distort the case. For a flange assembly, use the fastener sequence and torque given for the engine or transmission. Turn the shaft only when permitted, then refill with the correct liquid and inspect after initial operation and a suitable road test.
Engine and gearbox mounting diagnosis
A powertrain mounting carries mass, limits movement and isolates vibration. CORTECO's official material identifies engine mounts within its vibration-control range. The represented products include engine, manual-transmission and automatic-transmission mountings, but their construction is not uniform. Some applications may use conventional rubber-to-metal parts while others use hydraulic arrangements.
Look for split or perished elastomer, separated bonding, collapsed height, impact marks, escaped fluid and metal-to-metal contact. Compare movement under controlled loading with service criteria. Excess vibration alone is not proof: engine misfire, incorrect idle speed, a bent exhaust bracket, driveshaft condition or another mount can transmit similar symptoms.
Support the engine or gearbox with suitable equipment before loosening a mount. Do not put load through an oil pan or casing unless an approved method and load spreader are specified. Align brackets without forcing them, start all fixings correctly and tighten at the prescribed stage. Some mount bolts are single-use or angle-tightened; confirm before reuse.
Crankshaft pulleys, bolts and clutch guide sleeves
A torsional crankshaft pulley may include an elastomeric damping layer. Inspect for cracking, rubber extrusion, separation, wobble, timing-mark movement and belt misalignment. Noise can also originate from a tensioner, overrunning alternator pulley or accessory bearing. Remove belts and test components only by an authorised diagnostic process.
Crankshaft fasteners can have specialised torque-angle and reuse rules. Lock the engine using designated tools and points; do not rely on the transmission or improvised wedges. Confirm whether pulley replacement affects engine timing. Where consequences include valve-to-piston contact, the work calls for precise service data and competent execution.
Clutch guide sleeves combine a sliding surface with sealing in some represented descriptions. Check bore, flange, length and supplied shaft seal. Inspect the release bearing, input shaft and clutch contamination while access is open. A new sleeve should not be asked to conceal shaft play or a leaking upstream component.

Brake hoses must remain free from twisting, stretching and rubbing through full steering and suspension travel. Opening the hydraulic system requires controlled fluid handling and bleeding. Suspension struts store substantial spring energy, so use suitable equipment and procedures. These jobs should not be attempted without the competence to verify the entire safety-critical assembly.
MOT relevance and safe under-vehicle work
The DVSA MOT manual examines fluid leaks, engine and transmission mountings where their condition affects security, brake hoses, suspension components and relevant warning indications. A hydraulic brake-fluid leak can be a serious defect, while excessive fluid leakage elsewhere may fail where it creates environmental or road-safety risk. A new component is not an MOT promise because the tester assesses the complete vehicle.
