Plastikit: understand the range before choosing
Plastikit is U-POL's polyester-resin and glass-fibre repair system. The present AutoMotoPart range contains four different roles: CAT/5 50 ml liquid hardener only, FIBRE/5 glass-fibre mat, PK1 complete repair kit and RE/1 one-litre polyester resin. Resin needs the correct hardener ratio to cure, hardener is never used alone, and mat provides reinforcement only after full wet-out with correctly activated resin.

The four entries form one system but have different contents. CAT/5 is a 50 ml catalyst bottle, FIBRE/5 is 5 m² of mat, RE/1 is one litre of resin and PK1 bundles resin, hardener, mat and application items. Check the current pack contents because buying a single component does not create a complete repair setup.
Build a reliable shortlist
First determine whether glass-fibre reinforcement is permitted and capable of carrying the intended non-safety-critical load. Identify substrate, damage extent, access to the back, overlap and finish. Then plan mat templates, resin volume, 1–2% hardener measurement, batch size, ventilation and disposal before mixing anything.

If the job carries an occupant, suspension, steering, braking or crash load, contains pressurised or hazardous fluid, or lacks sound material for overlap, stop and use the vehicle/component maker's approved repair. ‘Permanent’ product wording does not approve a repair design.
Know exactly what each Plastikit item supplies
RE/1 is the one-litre unsaturated-polyester resin. CAT/5 is the 50 ml liquid hardener/catalyst and U-POL's live safety sheet identifies methylethyl ketone peroxide. FIBRE/5 is five square metres of glass-fibre mat. PK1 is the combined professional kit; U-POL lists resin, liquid hardener, matting, mixing cup, gloves and detailed instructions.
Hardener does not repair anything by itself and must not be poured directly onto mat or substrate. Mat without resin is only dry reinforcement. Resin without the correct CAT dose remains uncured. PK1 is convenient but its included consumables do not remove the need for additional task-specific PPE, ventilation, surface cleaner, abrasive, brushes and waste containers.
Measure 1–2% hardener and control exotherm
U-POL's Plastikit technical sheet specifies 1–2% CAT/2 or CAT/5 hardener and says to mix well immediately. Use an accurate method consistent with the sheet and pack instructions; do not estimate a splash or assume the whole 50 ml bottle belongs in one litre. Prepare only the resin amount that can be laid within the available working period.
Curing polyester resin generates heat. Temperature, catalyst percentage, batch size and shape interact: a large volume left in a cup can accelerate, smoke, distort its container or create a fire hazard even while a thin laminate remains workable. Keep mixed material spread over the work, never cap it in a sealed pot and move any unexpectedly hot batch away only if the safety plan allows without exposure.
Prepare, cut and wet out the laminate
Degrease by the U-POL process, remove loose material and abrade the sound repair area; the cited sheet uses P40 for its general process. Remove dust with the approved method and let the surface dry. Cut all mat layers before catalysing resin, allowing the required overlap and staggered edges. Frayed or contaminated mat should not be hidden in the laminate.
Brush activated resin onto the prepared area, lay a manageable piece of mat and stipple rather than sweep until fibres are uniformly wetted and air is displaced. Avoid pools of resin and dry white patches. Let the layer reach the stated condition before repeating. Extra thickness should come from a designed sequence of properly consolidated layers, not one heavy resin-rich mass.
Cure, inspect, sand and finish
U-POL gives an activated working period of up to 20–30 minutes at 20°C and states that gel/cure varies with ambient temperature. A product title saying it sets in 20–30 minutes must not be read as complete cure under every thickness and condition. Record time and temperature, protect the repair from movement and do not load it until the specified cure and inspection are complete.
Look for tacky resin, dry mat, trapped bubbles, voids, lifted edges and inadequate overlap. Do not sand an uncured or overheated laminate. Once cured as directed, use extraction and suitable respiratory, eye and skin protection for glass/resin dust. U-POL says pinholes may be filled with a compatible polyester body filler before a proven primer/paint system.
Professional chemical and repair safety
The current hardener sheet warns that heating may cause fire and that it can cause severe burns and eye damage; it requires original-container storage, cooling/ventilation and protective gloves, clothing and eye protection. The resin sheet identifies a flammable, irritating and sensitising unsaturated-polyester mixture and contains further current hazard controls. Read both full sheets rather than relying on a short page summary.
Keep catalyst away from resin until the measured mix, and never contaminate its bottle with a used stick or brush. Isolate ignition, protect drains and collect liquid residue, cured waste, contaminated cups and sanding debris by the stated route. For boats, tanks and vehicles, remove flammable vapour, electrical, pressure and confined-space hazards through a competent procedure before surface preparation begins.

The component names describe contents, not finished coverage or approved strength. Coverage depends on mat weight, number of layers, overlap, resin uptake and waste; structural suitability depends on the repair design, not the pack size.
Common errors around Plastikit products
- Buying CAT/5 hardener-only or RE/1 resin-only and treating it as a complete kit.
- Pouring the entire 50 ml hardener into one litre without measuring 1–2%.
