Armstead: understand the range before choosing
Armstead Trade supplies professional decorative and protective coatings. Seven five-litre entries are present. Four explicitly say Anti Slip—grey, black, red and yellow—and three say Floor Paint—green, grey and red. Grey and red therefore appear in both smooth and textured families, making the complete name essential. Do not let shared colour, can size or generic live-description wording blur the different specifications.
Build a reliable shortlist
Inspect the floor in service, not just a clean corner. Map vehicle routes, turning points, ramps, pedestrian areas, water or chemical exposure and places where tyres stand. A coating's adhesion and slip behaviour depend on the substrate, preparation, contamination and wear as well as its original texture.

If the floor is power-floated, chemically hardened, damp, contaminated in depth or already failing, obtain a specialist preparation/coating specification. Painting a test patch over an unsuitable substrate can look sound briefly while the traffic area later delaminates.
Standard AM305 smooth Floor Paint
Armstead describes AM305 as a solvent-based general-purpose smooth floor paint for interior concrete, wood and metal. Its published coverage is up to 16 square metres per litre on smooth average-porosity surfaces. It is intended for pedestrian foot traffic and light rubber-wheeled vehicle traffic, not heavy industrial service or prolonged contact with wet vehicle tyres.
Stir thoroughly and normally apply one or two coats by brush or roller. For new or bare porous surfaces, Armstead permits a sealing coat thinned with up to one part white spirit to ten parts paint; normal coats are usually unthinned. Touch dry is 4–6 hours and recoat 16–24 hours under stated conditions. The technical sheet requires at least 24 hours drying with good ventilation before use, extended when cold or humid.
AM306 textured Anti-Slip Floor Paint
AM306 is a ready-mixed textured coating intended to reduce slipping risk, with official examples including ramps, stairs and walkways. Published coverage is up to 8 square metres per litre on smooth average-porosity surfaces. Texture distribution depends on thorough stirring and consistent roller/brush technique. It does not remove the need to control water, oil, debris, footwear and cleaning.
Do not thin AM306. Seal new/bare porous areas with the supported thinned AM305 smooth coating, then apply two full anti-slip coats. Official data gives about one hour touch dry, 4–6 hours before recoating, light traffic after 24 hours and moderate use after 48 hours; full hardness is not reached for seven days. All periods extend at low temperature or high humidity.
Concrete moisture and surface exclusions
The current sheets require a sound, clean, dry floor, quoting less than 5.5 on a Protimeter screed scale. Remove laitance, dirt, grease and poorly adhering material and rinse away cleaning residues, then allow full drying. Some concrete can take many months to dry in depth. Confirm an effective damp-proof membrane and investigate rising moisture rather than sealing it under paint.
Armstead excludes power-floated or case-hardened concrete, floors treated with silicate hardeners, terrazzo, granolithic surfaces and constant-high-humidity areas from these general systems. It also excludes aggressive/heavy industrial settings and prolonged wet-tyre contact. Mechanical preparation or a specialist coating may be needed; never acid-etch or abrade without a method controlling residues, silica dust and adjacent equipment.
Wood, metal and previously coated floors
AM305 lists interior wood and metal. AM306's product description broadly lists interior/exterior wood and metal, but its August 2023 technical sheet says the anti-slip product is not recommended for interior wood. Follow that current specific restriction and seek Armstead advice where the intended timber application is unclear.
On metal, remove corrosion and establish the correct primer rather than applying floor paint directly by habit. On existing coatings, test adhesion, identify incompatible/lead-containing old paint and remove defective material safely. Repair cracks, joints and loose boards with materials suited to the expected loading; a coating cannot stabilise movement or structural failure.
Application safety, reopening and maintenance
Both products are solvent-based and Armstead recommends brush or roller, not spray application. Do not apply below 5°C. Isolate ignition sources, ventilate the area during application and drying, restrict access, and use the colour-specific safety data to select gloves, eye and respiratory controls. Keep containers upright, close them between uses and manage white spirit and cleaning waste through the site's chemical route.
Reopen in stages only after the supported cure and a dry-film inspection. Avoid tyre turning, jacks, stands, dragging loads and chemical washing during early cure. Mark defects and contamination quickly. Anti-slip texture must be cleaned without polishing it smooth or filling it with residue; reassess slip risk as wear develops. A painted line or textured bay still needs housekeeping and spill response.
